We tend to play it safe by pairing brightly coloured pieces with something in a more conservative colour, like white, black, or neutrals, but why be safe when you can be bold? Colour blocking is one sure way of standing out from the crowd. It isn’t so much a trend as it is a classic way of putting different colours in one outfit together in a failsafe manner. With a basic colour wheel, you can approach colour blocking in two ways—complementary, pairing colours on opposite ends of the colour wheel, or analogous, pairing colours that are next to each other. If you’re just dipping your toes into the world of colour, try shades that are just a hue or two away from each other, and remember the golden rule: not more than three colours in one outfit. Finally, keep accessories and prints to a minimal to keep the focus on the colour, and not overwhelm your look.
